Monte Grand Tournalin
Trip to Monte Grand Tournalin
3,379 m (1h15 from Petit Tournalin, 6h15 from Saint Jacques)
The summit of Grand Tournalin consists of two peaks: a southern peak at 3,370 m, which can be reached without mountaineering equipment, and a northern peak, slightly higher, which requires climbing gear for a descent and a Grade III climb.
The excursion we propose reaches the southern peak and can be classified as F (easy) in mountaineering terms, although fixed ropes help along the more challenging sections. We therefore recommend it only to those with good mountain experience and sufficient training to complete both the ascent and descent safely.
From the summit of Petit Tournalin, descend a few dozen meters and turn right (north). You will then go down a slope of unstable scree, which, depending on the season, may be covered by snow.
We strongly recommend bringing traction cleats, as this section can be difficult to cross when the snow is abundant or icy.
During the descent, it is important to keep an eye on the path that climbs up from Cheneil, as it helps you identify the correct direction. As you descend, you need to intercept this trail, paying close attention from above, as it is not always clearly visible once you lose elevation. Once you reach the path, the route becomes easier to follow, with stone steps and a steeper climb.
Shortly after, you will encounter the most challenging section of the route, where fixed ropes have been installed; the main difficulty here is the exposure. The trail then continues with switchbacks and stone steps, passing near exposed sections, until the terrain gradually levels out. From there, looking to the right, you will see the summit cross, now within easy reach.
